The Project

Madrid PianoMeetups began when I started learning the piano later in life. In my case, after turning 40, I decided to learn without any real prior foundation.

Learning piano as an adult is a real challenge. Beyond the obvious effort of learning an instrument, the solitude of the piano may be the hardest challenge to overcome. I missed having fellow musicians to talk with, share with, and learn from. Along the way, I kept wondering whether there were other people in the same situation: wanting to play piano as adults and share piano-centred moments with like-minded people.

That is how the PianoMeetups movement began. We are a pioneering club in Spain and Europe because of the way we do things.

We are a completely voluntary, non-profit initiative. Today we are a non-profit cultural association registered in Spain’s National Register of Associations. The costs of keeping the project running—equipment, room hire, Meetup.com, and so on—are covered by a small contribution from event attendees and by association members.

We play for ourselves, with no financial interest. Whether you are trying to overcome stage fright, preparing a repertoire, or simply doing it for pleasure, every pianist at every level is welcome.

An important part of each event starts after the performances. That is when the PianoMeetup Social begins: we continue the event with a drink and conversation. The musical and social sides are equally important; these events do not make sense without both.

We are not a singles group, nor do we want to be the school from Fame.

We cultivate a healthy, trusting atmosphere and reject any behaviour that creates discord. Anyone brave enough to step onto a stage and play in front of strangers deserves every possible encouragement.
